Swimming pool water treatment

Swimming pool water treatment is a continuous, cyclical purification process. The core of this process is the close integration of "physical filtration" and "chemical disinfection" to ensure clear, transparent, and hygienic water quality.

1. Basic Steps: Physical Filtration.

The purpose is to remove visible impurities from the water, such as leaves, hair, dander, and suspended particles. The system uses a circulating water pump to draw pool water, which first passes through a hair collector to intercept fibrous debris, protecting subsequent equipment.                                        Then, the water flows into the core filtration equipment, commonly of two types:

(1) Quartz Sand Filter (Particle Filter): Currently the most common method. Water flows through a layer of quartz sand inside the tank; the gaps between the sand particles effectively trap suspended solids in the water.

(1) Integrated Swimming Filter: Offers higher filtration precision, removing even smaller impurities, but also has higher equipment and maintenance costs. It is usually integrated with the circulating water pump into a single unit.

2.Chemical Adjustment and Disinfection.

Physical filtration cannot kill bacteria and viruses, nor can it adjust water quality. Therefore, chemical methods are needed to ensure the safety of water microorganisms.

(1) Adjusting pH (acidity/alkalinity) This is a prerequisite for effective disinfection. An unsuitable pH value will greatly reduce the effectiveness of disinfectants. National standards require that the pH value of swimming pool water should be maintained between 7.2 and 7.8. If the pH value deviates from this range, a pH adjuster (such as sodium bisulfate) needs to be added for adjustment.

(2) Adding Disinfectants Disinfection is of paramount importance in swimming pool water treatment, aiming to kill pathogenic microorganisms in the water. Currently, the mainstream disinfection methods include:

  • Chlorine disinfection: The most common and economical method. By adding chlorine-containing disinfectants (such as sodium hypochlorite, liquid chlorine, trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA, i.e., strong chlorine), etc.) to the water, the hypochlorous acid produced is used to kill bacteria and viruses. Its effectiveness is greatly affected by pH value; it is more effective in acidic environments (lower pH values).

  • Other disinfection methods: such as chlorine dioxide, ozone, ultraviolet light, etc. These methods are usually used as an adjunct or supplement to chlorine disinfection to enhance the disinfection effect or reduce the generation of chlorine disinfection byproducts.

3. Adding Other Auxiliary Agents.

Flocculants: For tiny colloidal particles in the water that cannot be directly intercepted by the filter, flocculants (such as aluminum sulfate) need to be added. They cause these small particles to aggregate into larger "flocs," which are then trapped by the filtration system.

Algaecides: To prevent algae growth in the pool water under sunlight, which can cause the water to turn green or cloudy, algaecides need to be added regularly. Maintaining sufficient residual chlorine levels is now recommended for algae control, rather than using heavy metal salts such as copper sulfate.

4. Persist in daily management and maintenance of the swimming pool.
