1, The fundamental but also most important reason is to test the structure for leaks.
When a pool is empty, the forces acting on the pool shell (whether made of concrete, steel, or a liner) are balanced. However, once filled, the pressure from tens to hundreds of tons of water exerts outward force against the walls and floor.
Only by filling the pool can you verify the integrity of the structure, pipe connections, and wall penetrations under actual water pressure, ensuring there are no leaks or structural deformations.
2, Adjusting the Hydraulic Balance of the Circulation and Filtration System.
A swimming pool's pump, filter, and piping form a hydraulic circulation system; its design parameters—such as flow rate, head, and suction at the return inlets—are calculated based on the pressure and hydraulic resistance present when the pool is filled to the operating water level.
When the pool is fully filled can the pump operate at its rated duty point, allowing for the testing of flow balance between inlets and outlets, as well as the assessment of whether suction levels are excessive or insufficient.
3, Verification of Water Level-Related Equipment
Many swimming pools are equipped with devices such as automatic water make-up valves, overflow drains, and water level sensors.
The operating water levels for these devices (e.g., the water level that triggers make-up or overflow discharge) can only be accurately set and calibrated when the water is near the full level; if the water level is insufficient, the devices will not operate at all, making it impossible to conduct the acceptance inspection.
4, Simulating actual loads to verify the platform structure
For specialized structures such as infinity pools and rooftop pools, the weight of the water when filled to capacity is a critical design load.
Filling the pool completely is an essential step to verify the safety and stability of the load-bearing structure and waterproofing layer under maximum load; this is directly linked to operational safety and cannot be skipped.
