Firstly,swimming pool design flaws: In pools utilizing a "forward circulation" system, in particular, the drain is located at the bottom, meaning suction acts directly within the pool. If there are insufficient return outlets, the suction force at an individual drain can become excessively strong.
Secondly,the most common cause is the failure of protective measures: if the drain grate (safety cover) is damaged, loose, or missing—thereby losing its protective function—parts of the human body can be directly sucked into the piping.
The main drain of swimming pool is a veritable "black hole." So how can we take preventive measures for this risk?
First of all,prioritize the use of reverse circulation water treatment systems, or locate drainage outlets on the pool bank rather than the pool bottom.And can use the Anti-suction bottom drain.
Then enhance safety measures: Use sturdy, low-gap safety covers and conduct regular inspections and maintenance.
Improve management: Equip the pool with a sufficient number of certified lifeguards, increase safety patrols, and place prominent signs at drainage outlets.
On other hand,when swimming ,keep a safe distance from the main drain. Do not play or linger near drainage outlets.
Parents must prioritize supervision: When taking children swimming, ensure constant, close, and undivided supervision.
What can we do if trapped by the suction?
Call for help immediately: Alert staff right away and ask them to shut off the water pump's power or close the valve immediately. Turning off the pump is the most effective way to eliminate the suction.
Maintain breathing: If you cannot break free, do your best to keep your mouth and nose above the water surface. If possible, have the trapped person hold a tube in their mouth to maintain breathing.
Try to break the vacuum: Attempt to pry open the edge of the drain to allow water to flow in, thereby reducing the pressure difference.
