How to determine if swimming pool water quality up to standard?
For ordinary swimmers, here are some quick ways to determine if a swimming pool's water quality is up to standard:
1. Firstly, look: Check if the water is crystal clear and free of floating debris. Observe the pool walls and bottom for smoothness and the presence of algae. If the water feels sticky to the touch, or if there are green spots on the pool walls, it indicates inadequate cleaning.
2. Secondly, smell:Get close to the water and smell the air. Is there a strong, pungent "bleach" smell (chlorine odor)? If you smell a faint, non-pungent chlorine odor, this is usually normal. This is because the residual chlorine (disinfectant) in the water is working effectively, killing bacteria while also producing some odor.
**Beware of these smells:
Odorless: If you can't smell any chlorine at all, be wary. This may mean insufficient disinfectant was added, and the bacteria in the water may be excessive.
Strong, pungent "bleach smell": If the odor is very strong, even causing eye irritation and coughing, it's often not because too much chlorine was added, but because the water contains excessive chloramines (i.e., bound residual chlorine). Chloramines are byproducts of the reaction between disinfectants and organic matter such as sweat and urine; they are more irritating and a sign of deteriorating water quality. Therefore, be wary of the irritating odor, not the smell of the disinfectant itself.
3. Thirdly, check: This is the most reliable step, confirming the results by reviewing publicly displayed information.
Check the notice board: Legitimate swimming venues must prominently display the day's water quality self-test results. You need to focus on two key indicators:
pH value: Should be between 7.2 and 7.8 (slightly alkaline).
Free residual chlorine: Should be between 0.3 and 1.0 mg/L.
Check the license: Check if a valid "Public Place Hygiene License" is displayed inside the venue. This is a basic prerequisite for the legal operation of the swimming pool.
Check the rating: Pay attention to the venue's hygiene reputation rating (usually divided into A, B, and C levels, with A being excellent). The higher the rating, the more reliable the hygiene management.
